Although it had begun as a way to infiltrate the Galileo's high command, Oren had to admit her post - battle drink with Darius had become a ritual she enjoyed. The matter of it growing into something more proved an even more effective strategy that Oren imagined. Not that she included the nature of her relationship with her source in her reports. Even in the KCA, certain methods of intelligence gather was not looked upon with a fond eye.

Having long since been allowed free access to Lamar's quarters, Oren walked in, the bottle of contraband in her hand.

The swish of the doors opening prompted Lamar to look up from his position on the couch in the main room. He was busy cleaning his assault rifle with all the various pieces littered across the coffee table in front of him, but when he saw his beautiful green-eyed girlfriend enter his quarters, he quickly lost all motivation to keep playing with his weapon.

Instead, he beamed up at her with bright white teeth and stood from the couch to come and greet her.

"Hey..." he leaned down and gave her a series of soft kisses on the lips. "Did you bring me a present?" he teased, looking down at what was in her hands.

"Don't tell Holliday, " she whispered, her voice laced with mock conspiracy as she returned Lamar's affections. She held up the bottle to reveal that it was Andorian brandy. " They can't fight, but they make a mean drink, " she said, nipping at Lamar's jaw before slipping past him and settling on the couch where he'd been cleaning his weapon earlier. Oren lounged in it, appearing quite cozy where she was as she took a swing from the bottle.

"He'll be the last to know, trust me." Lamar didn't trust the general very much, but obliged by his commands for the purposes of his own advancement. One of these days, he would gain enough influence and prestige to overthrow the general, and the Terran Empire would be in his control. But that was a ways off, and in the meantime, he had to play his cards right. Oren seemed to be on the same page...she was seductive and very intelligent, and between the two of them, they could easily take over the Empire in due time.

He hustled back over to the couch and plopped down next to her before reaching out to steal the bottle from her hands and take a long gulp. He looked over at her with an affectionate grin and wrapped a muscular arm around her shoulders to pull her close. "Do I dare ask where you stole this from? A dead Andorian's body?"

"You know I'm a lady," she replied, looking offended when she took the bottle back and took a sip, keeping up eye contact with him. "I took it first, then I killed him. Stealing off bodies is so... plebian," Oren joked.

He chuckled at that and leaned his cheek against the side of her head. "Stealing with honor...I like that. You almost sound like a Klingon," he laughed, teasingly.

"You better take that back!" Oren said with mock warning, stealing the bottle back from him and shooting him a playful look. She made no move to get away though. In fact, she scooted closer, enjoying the warmth of him.

"Well...then tell me about dead guy. What kind of operation did the general send you on?" he asked, wanting to know some of the fun details. His job wasn't nearly as glamorous, and usually it just involved maintaining personal security for Holliday and enforcing base regulations.

Oren shot him an appraising look, as if deciding whether or not he deserved to hear the story. Taking another swing from the bottle, she handed it back began the story.

"Alright. So, we got some intel on the KCA transporting this researcher through a nearby system under the guise of a Wallace class they got God knows where." Oren rolled her eyes.

"So, we intercepted the ship and pretended to be pirates, after their cargo. Naturally, they tried to negotiate, which we did," Oren explained, fidgeting slightly in her seat like she did every time she got to the more exciting parts. "While they were negotiating with our crew, they transported me over, into this little nook on the lower deck. I had on my stealth suit prototype, you know how much I love that thing," she said excitedly, repositioning herself on the couch so that she was on her knees, looking down at Darius.

"I managed to move past about three of the crew before one noticed the ripples and I had to break their neck and hide them," Oren explained, sounding frustrated with her own ineptitude.

"Eventually, after barely getting through, I got to the Andorian. I thought about killing him quietly and quickly, but I decided I wanted him to see my face," she shrugged. "He bargained with me, said he could shower me with gifts and power. Like I was some cheap whore he could buy off. So I slit his throat, took the research he was transporting and left before they even realised he was dead."

"Ha!" Darius grinned ear to ear. She always had the best stories to tell and always got the most fun assignments. He was jealous but also happy for her, and it sounded pretty typical of her to execute the job so smoothly. "You're a bad girl," he grinned, looking up at her.

"But I'm very good at it," Oren replied, a matching grin on her face as she grabbed his face and gave him a loud kiss on the lips. "I'll probably be stuck with you for the next few weeks though, doing boring things," she pouted.

"Huh...boring things?" He looked her up and down with a glint of desire in his dark eyes, then reached out and pulled her tank top up to reveal her toned, tattooed belly. He leaned forward and gave it a soft kiss, followed by another and another as he slowly worked his way down to her belt before looking up at her mischievously. "I bet we can think of some things to keep you busy," he winked.

"You always did have an overactive imagination," Oren told him, giving him a mischievous, teasing look before suddenly hopping away towards the replicator. As she turned, Oren's face changed to a more serious one as she replicated a glass of water for herself.

He noticed a quick change in her demeanor and took a long drink from the bottle of brandy while she was across the room. "Something wrong?" he wondered, hoping it wasn't anything serious.

"Hm?" Oren asked, making an effort to perk up as she turned to face Lamar again, glass of water in hand. "Of course not," she told him, shaking her head once and taking a sip. "I'm just...tired."

"Oh..." He patted the seat on the couch next to him and invited her to come back next to him. "Can I give you a backrub? It'll help you relax," he offered, happy to help her unwind after what had no doubt been a busy and somewhat-stressful day.

Oren smiled despite herself, for a moment feeling almost disappointed with Lamar's reaction. Sometimes he made her job incredibly difficult just being as considerate as he was. She walked back over to the couch, sitting down and resting her head on his shoulder. She didn't reply to his question, just choosing to stay there for a moment, looking lost in thought.

He wasn't quite sure what was up with her tonight. She seemed...distant and distracted, and he wasn't sure why. At the same time, he didn't want to prod her if she wasn't in the mood. Be a professional infiltrator was tough work sometimes and it could get to even the toughest person.

"At least you get a few weeks off before your next assignment," he said casually, making small talk while drinking some more brandy.

She nodded against his shoulder absently. Letting out a long sigh, Oren rested her chin against his shoulder bone. "Do you thing this whole mess will ever end?" she finally said after a long period of comfortable silence passed between them.

"What? You mean the war?" he asked. A quick shake of his head quickly dissuaded that notion at least in the immediate sense. "Not as long as Holliday is in command. And as long as he's in charge, he won't stop until he finds that Orion queen regent and kills her. Never seen a guy hate someone so much before in my life," he added before looking over at her.

"Why do you ask? Do you...want the war to be over?" War was all Lamar'd ever known, and the idea of peace seemed foreign to him.

Oren remained quiet for several moments more. Then she spoke, her voice reflecting her words.

"I'm just tired," she repeated. "I keep wondering how long until my next mission is my last."

"I guess when we finally take out the KCA. But it'll be a long fight," he thoughtfully said, "because even once the queen regent is dead, we still have to conquer their worlds. That's the only way. If we don't...then they'll just rebuild their fleet and try to attack us again."

"I don't think I'll live that long. "

Her voice sounded worn out, defeated, the voice of a woman resigned to her inevitable fate.

He looked over at her and frowned out of concern. She seemed a bit dejected, and even if it was just fatigue, he'd never really heard her speak that way before. "Hey. Oren..." he pulled her close and rubbed his large hand up and down her side. "Don't talk like that. We both knew what we signed up for and we'll be fine."

Oren lifted her head to look at him. She smirked.

"Lies like that are why you could never do my job," she joked, catching herself before the weight of her mission really took its toll. Each year felt harder and like a heavier burden on her shoulders. Being with Darius made it almost too easy to let go. She knew it wouldn't be long now.

"Well shit...you want to trade jobs for a day? Then you can be Holliday's lap dog and do all his menial work. I bet a girl with your skills would love to do basic security all day and night," he retaliated in jest while elbowing her playfully in her ribs.

"I don't think even years of intelligence training and infiltration experience could get me as far up Holliday as you've been. You're truly gifted, " she teased, nudging him back.

"Yeah. Probably not," he agreed. The general didn't really trust anyone and for good reason. Lamar was one of the few who he'd managed to establish a good relationship with.

Darius stifled a small yawn and looked over at his lady. "I think it's shower and bedtime for you." He reached down and scooped her up in his arms while giving her a kiss, then took her into the bathroom and turned on the sonic shower for her.

Snuggling up to him while still in his arms, Oren kissed his cheek and pressed her lips against his ear. . "If you promise no funny business, you can join me?" She grinned.

He returned her gin with one of his own which spread from ear to ear and showed off his white teeth and glinting irises. "I promise," he said, secretly crossing his fingers in his mind.

This was really fun to read. I actually like this Oren, and don't hate that Lamar so much now. Nice!
