ON:

Jaana looked at the padd in her hand and looked who now to see. The XO. She headed for the turbolife and went to the second deck. Upon arrival she headed for the office and pressed the chime.

"Enter," Scarlet called out, standing behind her desk and close to a shelf, pouring out a steaming cup of coffee into a crisp white cup. She looked up to see who it was, recognising her from the files of the new staff she'd been sent. "Come in, take a seat."

She did after handing her a padd with her transfer data. Jaana was nervous. Didn't very good what to say. "I uhm.." she stuttered. "I just arrived and was told to go to your office." she said in a quit voice.

Scarlet nodded as she took her own seat, glancing over the PADD before opening her computer to bring Jaana's file up. "Yes, we will get you cleared and ready for action. So, Miss Voutilainen, why don't you tell me a little about yourself."

Jaana was surprised by that question. On her previous job, no one was really interested in her. "After the academy I've worked for Starfleet HQ for two years. And the last four years at the Academy as a teacher's assistant." She said, mentioning her service records for the last six years.

Scarlet nodded, looking at the screen to follow her record with her. "So your heart lays very much in research then." she asked with a slight nod, looking back to her. "You will find life on a Starship very different."

"Yes, I'm a lab rat, as my sister would say" Jaana said while smiling. "I've done some tours on a Starship during my academy days, but I haven't gotten my space legs jet."

Scarlet nodded, watching her for a long moment. It wasn't quite concern, but she was certainly watching. "You understand, of course, that sometimes life on a Starship can be dangerous. In those times, we need all hands prepared and able to help defend this ship."

"I am fully aware of that." That was one reason she hadn't applied for a ship posting, as that meant she couldn't focus solely on her field of interest. "I've taken an refresh course at the academy before coming here." She had convinced a fellow teachings assistant to let her sit in on some of his classes. "Even though I'll never be a Tactical officer, I know what to do in case of emergency."

"No, that sounds great," Scarlet assured with a small smile, impressed that she'd got herself some refresher courses on her own initiative. "Trust me, we have Security staff to run around with the rifles, you can stick to the dangerous experiments that would boggle me," she said easily with a soft chuckle. "I just wanted to make sure you were prepared for the unexpected, well, as much as you can be, and it seems that you are, so I'm pleased. Obviously, as a Science ship, we do our best to sponsor scientific research here. You should feel free to approach your department chief with any plans or ideas for research projects. They'll be happy to help you."

"Well, my main reason for requesting posting on the Galileo is that I need to complete my PhD research." Jaana said, suddenly feeling more confident. "I'm researching the differences between the heliopause of the five largest Federations members, beside Earth, and comparing the way they conducted research of it over the last 500 hundred years."

"I won't insult you by pretending that I can be helpful for that in the least," Scarlet replied bluntly, shaking her head with a half smile. "But I know a Science department that can be, so I'm sure it will go well for you. Before you can get to work though, you will need to have a medical check up in Sickbay and a psych check up with a counsellor. Once they've cleared you for duty, you'll be able to get to it. You should also, of course, check in with your department chief. Lieutenant Pendleton is the Chief Research Officer."

"I have already met with Lieutenant Stace and have appointments with a doctor and counsellor." She said, pointing to the padd she was carrying at the second part of the sentence. "I was hoping to start tomorrow, if I get cleared of course."

"Then that sounds all in order," Scarlet nodded with approval. "Did you have any questions?"

"Not for the moment" Jaana said as she checked her padd. She had wrote down what she wanted to know. Or ask.

"In that case, you're free to go," Scarlet nodded with a small smile, tapping on her computer controls to check her in.
