Down to Business

Posted on 05 Mar 2015 @ 1:51am by Lieutenant JG Kalos Jang Ph.D.

396 words; about a 2 minute read

"So, it's finally happening. We're going to be getting underway in the next few hours, to go out on a mission. A mission in space." Kal drummed his fingers on the console in front of him, expending nervous energy. The personal log cut out as he accidentally saved it, and then reopened it a moment later, cursing.

"Okay. No finger drums on the computer. I'm finally really getting out there. We're going on war games, which, I don't really know what that means. I guess I'll get to run to battle stations at some point, which will be fun. Get to use all those starship drills they run in the Academy. I got blown up real good acting as the science officer for the Kobayashi Maru simulation at the academy. I sold it like a champ. I can do that again."

Kal sat back in his chair as he thought over it all. "I've been wanting this since I was sixteen years old, stuck on Farius, wishing I could be anywhere else. I've wanted to be on a starship, out in the middle of all this. Back when I was getting in fights and holding up stores and pickling my brain in whatever I could get my hands on, this was what I wanted. I never told anybody, but this was where I always wanted to be. And it's here, and I don't know what to do with myself." Kal grinned.

"That reminds me. The energy dissipation project is going well. Other than the admiral worrying that I was going to turn people into the Borg, I've had very little opposition to my work. I'm fabricating soon. Testing right after. I have to get requalified with phasers, anyway. I'm going to have to do that before I can check one out to test on my project. Always hated phasers. Shaped weird. Anyway, it's the start of big things. I can feel it. Then there's going to be the medical nanomachines that Kohl came to me with. Maybe that should be my next project. I like him, he's a good guy, I want to help him. I want to do some real good for a change." Kal looked off at nowhere in particular for a few seconds, then seemed to notice the log was still running. "End log," he said, saving and closing the log.
