Upside Down

319 words; about a 2 minute read

"Talk about upsetting a routine, the world has turned upside down," Scarlet chuckled softly as she shook her head gently, watching the computer recording her before giving a light shrug despite her words.

"I'm going to be in charge of a Miranda class ship for the next few days. Which in some ways is going to be fantastic...they may have a fight getting it back from me after," she admitted, but with a small, playful smile. "On the other hand...new people, new positions. It won't be easy to navigate. I'm glad that Kohl was appointed as my First. I know where I am with him, I know he is capable."

Falling silent for a long moment, Scarlet's features tightened with tension, holding her glass firmly between tight fingers. "It's been a tough couple of months," she admitted quietly, shaking her head gently. "Holding the line isn't always the easiest job, but someone has to do it. Sometimes I miss the black and white lines of the marines...sometimes I'm glad for the room to breathe here. Either way, it's definitely going to be tougher now I've had to leave Lily behind at the base."

Scarlet just stared down at the desk for a long moment, rubbing the back of her neck. "I know she'll be alright with Claire. I'm more bothered than she is. But it's only a few days. I'm just glad we'll be busy. Keep the mind focussed."

She gave a firm nod to herself, her sharp breath indicating that she was moving on from the brief regret, forcing it out of mind to concentrate on the here and now. "I'll be interested to see what the Klingons have to throw at us. I know this is meant to be a joint exploration of learning and experience, but....well...to be honest, I just can't believe they don't have something up their sleeve for us...."

It's impressive how you communicated even more with the moments of silence than with her words.
