Counselor/Medical Officer's Log #26 - "Gratitude"

246 words; about a 1 minute read

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm ready for us to move on from this mission. What started as an intriguing mystery to be explored has turned into a nightmare. I don't just mean that metaphorically either. Normally when people use the phrase nightmare in reference to a mission, it's an exaggeration of its complexity or the stress involved. They may even pair the word with "diplomatic" for clarification.

Who knew when I said it, I would mean all of the above, to include an actual living, breathing nightmare complete with creatures I thought were mere fodder for ghost stories?

This mission has had the markings of one of those nightmares that is equal parts terrifying and wonderful. Besides the stress and confusion of the mines and keeping the Cardassians happy, I've been able to socialize more and we've added two tiny new additions to the crew. I'm pleased to say for the first time in a long time, I don't mean tribbles. What is it about holding a newborn that makes everything feel ok? Whatever it is, I wish we could bottle it.

That the universe could provide something so wonderful in the midst of such loss and trauma could either confirm the arbitrary nature of the universe and our impact on it, or it could be an opportunity for gratitude. With time and the company of good friends, I am reminded that often happiness is a choice. I choose to be grateful today.
