Captain's Log, Stardate 67589.4

Much has transpired since my last entry. I am attaching battle logs, sensor data, and crew casualty reports following our engagement with Borg forces after investigating the disappearance of USS Venture. Our suspicions were correct; they were indeed in dire trouble and we have only managed to rescue a handful of whatever remaining crew compliment we could find in the escape pods.

We were engaged by the Collective shortly after rescuing the survivors and the battle did not go well. We managed to fight off a Borg Probe, only to face what appears to be a larger task group consisting of multiple cubes. We sustained heavy damage and our ship was crippled. During the fight, they abducted some of our crew including my XO. They...assimilated him and took him back to the cube. I was also assimilated, but fortunately I remained on board Galileo long enough four our medical team to successfully reverse the process. Still...I do not feel 100% and the lingering collective voices still echo in my head from time to time. I can only image this is how Captain Picard and many other liberated Borg officers must have felt.

While I was incapacitated, my 2XO was in command and our crew made a startling discovery. The Borg which attacked us are not members of the general Collective, but rather servants of a reclusive species which we have yet to identify. This race apparently has the ability to control the Borg which is intriguing yet terrifying at the same time. They showed us a semblance of mercy by not destroying our ship and instead escorted us to what appears to be their homeworld. We have made initial contact with them and they are...strange, to say the least. They appear to be xenophobic and claim we have violated their territory -- the reason for their attacks against our ships -- but we were unaware of such claims until it was too late.

An away team has now been sent down to the surface of the planet to attempt first contact in the hope we can negotiate with these beings. I am not very optimistic, and have therefore ordered a series of covert rescue parties to board one of the Borg cubes and attempt to recover our assimilated crew members...including my XO. I am not confident our plan will work and crew morale is very low, but inaction is not an option at this point. Our officers and civilians do not deserve to be left behind as drones, slaves of a more powerful race.

Whatever the outcome, my crew has performed with distinction throughout their entire service aboard Galileo. Let the record show we explored new frontiers, and if we are to perish, let it be known we sacrificed our lives in the name of discovery and science.

Computer, end log.
