1,104 words; about a 6 minute read

Deep Space Five, Family Quarters, 4 Weeks before the destruction of the USS Venture

Luke zipped the top of his duffel bag and placed it gruffly next to the other two packed bags. Who knew that a Marine needed so many items of clothing on a temporary assignment, though he suspected Abbey had some doing with its contents. "Abbey?" He called out, the sound of sobbing coming from his room was tearing him apart.

Abbey's red face materialized from behind the door after a few seconds of sniffing and obvious face wiping. Her face glistening from the salty streams of tears that rolled down her face before free falling towards the cold metallic floor, which is how the mood felt right now. Cold. Abbey looked as if she had been crying for hours but of course both of them knew that she had been. "Do you really have to go?" She whimpered walking towards the centre of the room avoiding eye contact with her father.

He sighed heavily before intercepting his daughters movements and wrapping his large bulky arms around her, trapping her and minimising her movement. "You know I do dear, Its my Job and -"

"And it gets you away from here" She said finishing the sentence for him she started sobbing again. "You always do this!" This time she sounded more angry than upset. "You always run away when something bad happens!" She pushed away holding her hands to her face concealing the fact she was now in full cry mode.

"Yes, Yes I do and you know why!" He countered turning and shoving vigorously a pair of trouser into his half filled suitcase. "I just, I just need some time to think" He tried to steady his voice but it was obvious he was breaking. "Your mums funeral is in eight weeks I'll be back for then its only temporary"

Abbey wondered if the words were not just to comfort her or if he was actually trying convince himself that it was the right thing to do. "But why are you leaving Deep Space Five? What about me?" She asked wiping the tears out of her already bloodshot eyes with the cuff of her shirt.

Luke only looked over his shoulder as he stopped packing once again. "You've got your studies to deal with, if you ever want to get into starfleet you cant keep following me around" It was the truth but if he tried to sound that he meant it, it didn't work.

"Is that what you said to mum? To stop following you?" She asked, "She always said that you couldn't ever settle down that the Marines was your one and only life, like we ever mattered!" Abbey regretted the words as soon as they left her lips "Sorry." she said quickly but the damage was already done and she could see the hurt in her fathers eyes, even from across his shoulder.

Bowing his head it was obvious that she had just broke his heart, "Abbey..." He didn't deal well in these sort of conflict's even though he had been divorced for six years Lillian, his ex-wife and Abbey's mums death took a toll on him. "I'm not running, I'm just doing my job. I promise when I come back I'll take time of, just me and you we can go back to Earth for a while or visit Bajour, you've always wanted to do that." He said recalling something she said when she was a child, probably around twelve or thirteen.

Abbey shrugged "I don't care where we go dad, I just want us to be together all this running around all this - " She held her arms out around the room pointing to the packed bags and a half decorated room "I just want to keep what's left of my family" She fell into his chest. She could hear his heart pound heavily.

Luke closed his arms around her again stroking through her hair and shushing. "And you will Abbey, in six weeks I'll be back and we can pick up the pieces of our family." The broke with the sound of beeps signalling that a station wide message about to be broadcast.

=^= All Passengers for transit to the USS Venture please report to the outer docking ring, bay 2. I repeat all Passengers for transit to the USS Venture please report to the out docking ring, bay 2. Ops out =^=

Abbey looked up to her dad with watery eyes "I love you dad, please come back safe" She said kissing him on the forehead, having to stand on her tips to do so. "And please, please, please come back safe!" She gave a shaky smile before moving off from him and zipping up his last bag. She handed this bag to her dad "I'll make sure the rest get transported to the ship" She gave him one last hug.

"Thankyou Abbey, don't be scared to call once in a while make sure I'm staying safe yeah?" He held her shoulder squeezing it comfortably before letting her fall back into his chest he kissed her hair it smelled of a mix between roses and lemons. "I love you."

After a brief lull Luke shuffled the bag over his shoulder and moved towards the door he gave Abbey a weak smile "Goodbye and don't forget, I'll love you no matter what!" He walked out of the door, he was grateful that she didn't put up to much of a fight and allowed him to leave though he could already hear the cries of his daughter.

Shuttle Transport

Abbey had done what she had promised and the rest of his bags which contained mostly clothing were in the ships hold. Luke sat on one of the spare seat's it was apparent that not many people were transferring to the Venture so he had a varied pick of seat's. He decided to pick one with a window view.

As the ship departed he gave a glum look towards the part of station Abbey would be and then to the part of station that had been damaged by the terrorist attack , this was when he allowed himself to shed a tear. He could feel the warmth slowly slink down his face he did not make any attempt to wipe away, his cry was silent. Unaware to him this would be the last time He would see his daughter.
