Captain's Log, Stardate 67329.4

The days since our arrival at the Rojar system have been very eventful and I am content with the progress we are making. So far, we have begun charting the inner planets of the system and have begun sending away teams down to the two Class-M moons orbiting Rojar II.

Initial observations of the moon R01 have appeared promising. The large world supports a flourishing ecosystem and it seems that no advanced life-forms have yet formed. It seems as though the moon is in a prehistoric period with no indications of outside influences, which I find fascinating.

The same cannot be said for the second moon, R02. Our first scans of the moon from orbit discovered severe signs of widespread destruction and we were able to determine multiple weapons signatures, several of which belonged to known Borg energy weapons. There appeared to once be a flourishing civilization on the moon, but now all that remains is rubble and the ruins of several large metropolises. No life signs have been detected, apart from a few forms of indigenous animal and plant life. Whatever happened on that moon...it seems to be a lost civilization. Another casualty of Borg destructiveness.

On a curious note, R02 appears to be emitting some type of low frequency EM radiation. We have not detected any life or active technology on the world and I am puzzled by the reasons behind this. At first I thought it could be residual energy signatures from weapons fire, but the decay rate of those weapons signatures indicates that whatever war or battle which took place here, did so over a hundred years ago...well beyond the time during which most radiation dissipates. Currently I have two away teams on the surface and it is my hope that they can further investigate these ruins and obtain as much information as possible. Needless to say, I remain wary of the situation, even with USS Venture standing guard over us.

Deep sigh followed by long pause.

Unfortunately, our exploration has come at a price. My Chief Security/Tactical Officer, Lieutenant Stone, and his MWD, Sidious, were both killed in action by a large predatory creature while participating in an expedition of the R01 moon. I have notified Starfleet and his next-of-kin, but it is always a difficult time for me when I lose a member of my crew who I am responsible for. Starfleet is no doubt a dangerous occupation at times, but nevertheless it is never easy for me to handle losses. It has been the most challenging aspect of command for me, and one which I never feel (and hope) I will grow accustomed to.

I will be departing from Galileo for several days due to new orders which I have received from Starfleet. The details of the mission are classified but it is my hope that I will be able to return to the Rojar system in a timely fashion. For now, however, I must stay focused on the task ahead of me while Commander Holliday takes over the ship in my absence.

Computer, end log.
