Loyal Servant

498 words; about a 2 minute read

“I do not wish to do this.” It sounded petulant even to her own ears, so she could hardly imagine what her illustrious mother would think.

A long braid was tugged a little too vigorously, and Sera’s head jerked to the side. Her eyes caught the fathomless dark ones of her mother in the mirror in front of her. “Your desires are irrelevant. You will perform your duty as required.” T’Rel’s cold tone allowed for no further argument, and Sera dropped her eyes in capitulation.

She had been informed only 73 minutes ago that she would be married at sunset, and to Viruk Awidat, of all males. Sera knew very little of Viruk other than they were of similar age, and only recalled meeting him once years ago as a child when his family had attended court within the walls of Wuh os Klomak. It made no political sense why this pairing was to be in her—or her clan’s—favor. Awidat was a high house within the clan, but given what she would inherit, surely a more valuable match would be logical? Wait…

Ko-mekh…where is Ko-mekh’il?” Her head was jerked again, and she made a small hiss in protest.

“She is currently unavailable.” T’Rel responded with a lift of her brow.

Sera turned around and looked up to her mother and studied her for a moment in silence. This…this was a transaction. “What are you procuring with this agreement?”

”Kroykah!” T’Rel rebuked, but she wasn’t quite able to keep her eyes solidly on Sera’s blue ones. Even in this her daughter favored her mate’s mother…far too perceptive for her own good.

“I deserve to know what my obedience will buy, Ko-mekh…” After a moment of silence as the two stared at one another, T’Rel finally relented. “Yes. I suppose you do. Your marriage to Viruk will secure my freedom.”

“Your freedom? You are not allowed to—” Her response was cut off by her mother’s interjection.

“I will be a slave to this clan no longer! Heed my advice, daughter, and do whatever you can to get away from this place. You will find the fate awaiting you here will come with chains…”

“Illogical. Servitude is inherent, Ko-mekh.”

“I did not choose this.” T’Rel said emphatically, “I was taken from my purpose to serve your father and this clan. I was kidnapped and all but enslaved.” She referred to the manner in which her father obtained her as a mate. There were many aspects of Lyr’Zor that followed the ‘Old Ways.’

“You do not appear to have suffered overmuch, Ko-mekh, and I do not choose this.” Sera retorted, knowing it was all futile. Regardless of her mother’s motivation, fealty to one’s elders was sacrosanct in Vulcan culture. She would submit.
