Gabriel smiled as he sat back in his bunk, his hand going to the gold cross he always wore around his neck, the pad of his thumb stroking over the small diamond set in it.

At least Constantin hadn’t fallen asleep this time.

His mind went to the first time they had gone back to his place. When they had been virtual strangers. Too much drink, one thing had led to another and before he knew it, they were on his bed. The rest was, even now, blurry, but the hangover had been vicious. But not as vicious as the disappointment when they'd woken up to find themselves still dressed, having passed out moments after hitting the bed, with absolutely nothing having happened between them.

And Connie had looked so poorly afterwards.

This time, it had been different. A long build up of their friendship, getting to know each other properly. A romantic gesture in space. And then the night before the reception. It had been amazing. Different, but so good. He hadn’t felt this vulnerable in…

Forever.

It was a lot to deal with in a way, his own insecurities, his doubt. That suddenly the other man would wise up and realise that Gabriel Stark was too damaged, or that his past was too muddled, to take a chance on.

But he had promised himself not to worry about it. He had to trust in Connie to know what he wanted, to respect his agency in it all. Even if it meant that Gabriel Stark was someone he could love.

Love. Now that was a word and a half, not yet said, not yet hinted at. But who knew. Maybe some day.
