A Plot to Murder

325 words; about a 2 minute read

"Hey, computer, I want to do a personal log, but this has to be confidential."

Jemima sat in her darkened room. Her new roommate was out and she finally had a moment to herself.

"Log marked as private," the computer intoned.

"Good. I don't want my new roommate to know about this. I was bunking with Goldie Brown, but I'm a cadet and she's enlisted, so the new captain split us up. It's not like we were best friends, but now I have to get used to someone else and that's not fun."

She sighed and there was a long pause. "But that's not why I want this to be private. "She shook her head, not caring that the log couldn't record it. "I heard some of my crewmates plotting a murder. Three murders, actually. They've been planning this for weeks, even before we got to Regula I. They had to wait until we got to the station to set things in motion."

She started to giggle, then covered her mouth. "They're setting up a cargo bay for tomorrow night, 0100 hours. They've been hiding the victims there since we left. I heard them talking about boiling them alive."

She paused and took a deep breath. "They had to fatten them up first. They said it wouldn't be the same if they were puny. And when they're good and dead, the guys plan to crack their shells and dip them in butter. Can you believe it?"

Jemima began to bounce in her chair and then to laugh. "I can't tell anyone because they only have three. But can you believe that no one's found out about it until now? Well, except for me. I'm not invited, but they're paying for my silence with chocolate. Betazoid chocolate. It's a fair trade. So, until they dispose of the evidence, this is top secret. End log and keep this to yourself."
