Personal Log, Lieutenant Aria Rice, Chief Security....wow.

Okay, let's have a real talk here, my little crazy ship! The Powers That Be, in this case whoever (or is it whomever? I never could get that right) does the personnel assignment, decided that I was going to be the person in charge of Security on the USS Galileo. So, despite having a career that has seen me (amongst other things) protecting a Vorta, surviving an avalanche during a third contact, fighting Borg, getting de-haired by weird aliens, running after pirates and smugglers, surviving the last six months...all while getting promoted and demoted so fast that it would make a Vulcan question their logic....

They have now put me in charge of people. As in actual in charge, not just on the bridge looking cool. Actual in charge of people, which will mean the following (in no particular order):

Orientating new members of my department (which is fancy words for remembering people's names and make sure they know where everything is).

Monitoring and evaluating staff performance (code for making sure said staff don't kill themselves or anyone else whilst doing their jobs).

Managing a departmental budget and forecasting budgetary requirements (hey, we broke the phasers! We need new phasers! Got to love while it isn't about cost, it is about resources to replicate/acquire said items).

Setting strategic long and short-term departmental goals and evaluating outcomes (or as I like to call it: how can we get the tiny department working better!).

Motivating and inspiring staff and facilitating personal growth (Career day. Basically career day!)

Ensuring the highest levels of quality are met (also known as dear Security-gods, don't let me mess up an inspection...)

Communicating job expectations to staff (because if the Academy didn't do it right, people might think Security is eating donuts and relaxing...)

Ensuring adherence to regulations (which is not just Prime Directive, it is all the directives! All of them! And the safety rules...)

Ensure the safety of the ship and its crew.

The last is more or less "don't get people killed unnecessary". I take that one serious. Actually, I take it all seriously. But the truth is...

I am nervous. This is big. And I have to make sure that my people (yes, they're mine now) are able to do their duties. And to make sure they got everything they need to do their jobs. I am responsible for all of them. Maybe that is scarier than anything else.

I am accountable, not just to the Captain, or them, but their families too. If something happens to any of them, it is on me.

So I need to make sure, ship, that I don't mess it up. Because if I do, people die.

Now that's scary.

Computer, end log.
