Captain's Log, Stardate 69012.5

The Tholians have detected the Genesis signatures, I am now certain.

This will be my last log as commanding officer of Galileo for the time being. Maybe forever. I've cross-referenced all available data from Doctor Marcus' experiments with known Tholian movements in this sector over the past fifty years. In my opinion, there can be no other reason they've now suddenly descended on the Latari system and initiated conflict with the Federation.

USS Trial was lost in our brief skirmish with the Tholians and it's clear we don't have the experience or technology to further engage them. We cannot use force to protect our colonies, which means...the only recourse is now diplomacy. And this falls to me.

I intend to depart the ship on my own against standing orders, then rendezvous with the Tholians to offer my surrender. I'm no exo-psychologist but during our brief communications with them, they sounded agitated. Very agitated, with a profound sense of urgency. That they did not destroy Trial and instead captured her, makes me believe they are searching for something. Information.

I will give them what I believe they want - Starfleet's Project Genesis files. Whatever Genesis was, or what it still is, cannot be allowed to propagate. The technology is dangerous and its results unpredictable. The Federation's state secrets are only as confidential as deemed necessary, and if there is any chance we can salvage this system and avoid war with the Tholians...then that is what I must do.

Computer, end log
