Captain's Log, Stardate 69008.5

I must be brief. Time is limited and there is much to note.

Less than two hours ago, Galileo and our escort, USS Trial, arrived at the Latari system. Immediately we encountered high levels of solar radiation and sensor scattering but were able to detect the distress beacon of USS Franconia in orbit of one of the colonies. She was the search-and-rescue starship dispatched almost six months ago to investigate colonies' initial disappearance.

Our analysis of Franconia's debris field revealed trace signatures of known Tholian weaponry. It is my belief she was attacked...possibly ambushed, from what we've seen. Only one survivor was recovered and we're evaluating his condition. He appears to be suffering from an unknown ailment -- perhaps some form of silicone-based contaminant, maybe a virus. We are unsure. Quarantine protocol has been established and we will continue to monitor, run analyses, and interrogate.

Scans of the first colony site on Latari B III revealed total destruction. An unknown geological event is taking place on the planet's surface near the location of the Federation settlement. I can only describe this 'event' as geothermal in nature, for we are still gathering data and have dispatched an away team. However, I have not seen such large, intense and isolated volcanic activity on any Class M world in my observation or my studies.

With the threat of possible Tholian incursion into the system, Galileo has quickly moved to the second colony site, Latari A III. Initial scans of the world have revealed similar destruction of the colony settlement as we observed at Latari B III. But...we have now detected signatures of the Genesis device.

Genesis Protocol has been activated ship-wide and I will now brief my officers on their new directive. Expect further encrypted communications following our execution of the standing orders.

Computer, end log
