A New Beginning

Posted on 30 Mar 2018 @ 3:25am by Commander Marisa Wyatt

524 words; about a 3 minute read

Marisa walked into her quarters and replicated a cup of canela and hibiscus herb tea, then sat down at her console. "Computer, start personal log."

The computer beeped its readiness.

Marisa took a sip of her tea and sighed. "Sandoval personal log one. Might as well start over as I'm making a fresh start as a science officer. Let's call it a new beginning."

"Shortly after arriving for my interview for the position on the Galileo, I received a message from my friend, Pete. He accepted a desk job with Starfleet Sciences. I still can't believe it. I never thought he'd retire from fieldwork. The desk job came with a promotion--which he deserves. He was one of my mentors and has helped hundreds of starry-eyed archaeologists learn the ropes. He'll ensure that politics don't ruin the study of history through archaeology and anthropology. They couldn't have picked a better person for the job."

"But that was only part of why he called." She took another sip of her tea. "He called to tell me that he officially reviewed my files and what happened with the Cartagena and on Kreanus. Apparently, I was up for promotion wen...everything happened. Starfleet put it on hold when Captain Saalm was put on trial and then my license as a Starfleet Counselor was revoked. He convinced them that the way I handled myself on Mirzcek III was proof that I knew what I was doing. And, well, now I'm a full Lieutenant with all the rights and privileges of the rank."

She chuckled softly and took another sip of her tea. "I will have to thank Miraj for taking me there--and for sticking with me. She was invaluable on that trip."

"The Galileo launch has been delayed, so I've been assigned to the Schofield for a quick trip. Pleione Gamma is showing rapid signs of becoming a Cepheid class variable star. So, we're off to observe and analyze. It's an amazing opportunity."

She paused for a moment and took another sip of her tea. "So is being asked to join the new Galileo. The First Officer arranged for me to have an interview with Captain Saalm. She's been pardoned and given command. It seems we've all been given a second chance. I plan on doing better with this one. I will NOT be mooning after any fellow officers. In fact, the last time I met with...him...I barely had a flutter. I think we can be friends. At least I hope so."

"I've met some of the scientists I'll be working with. They are an eclectic lot, which I like very much. Quirky is always good. And since I'm far from conventional myself, I have high hopes for us meshing well."

Another long pause. "A new ship, a new opportunity, a new promotion. And a new start. Things are finally looking up. Knock on wood." She knocked on the nearest piece of wood, even though she wasn't superstitious. Just in case.

"Computer. End log. Play Chopin."

The computer beeped and soft music began to play over the speakers. She took another sip of her tea and smiled.
