"Well from a relatively uninteresting survey mission has come the surprise of finding out that there is a whole budding civilization on one of the planets of the variable star.

The prime directive which as a fleet officer I have sworn to uphold grates at me. We cannot interfere, help them evacuate or do much of anything but make some clandestine observations. Billions of living, thinking beings are going to die and for what a rule that says a non warp culture must not be contacted or their fate interfered in any way.

The star is becoming more unstable as I write this and sooner rather than later one of the solar eruptions is going to hit the planet and make a living hell out of it. Eventually the rest of the planet will be toasted and everything wiped out. May the gods and goddesses damn fleet rule makers. I wonder how they would like to be in the place of these people?

If I had my way, I would put then on the planet and say: 'Sorry can't do anything for you, rules is rules, tough luck.' The Klingon border is not all that far away and perhaps call them instead. They have no such compunction about interference but then again if there is no planet to make part of the glorious empire then they would probably not care a wit either, just a bunch of people only worth working in a slave mine or such.
