Eelim sat at his desk in his temporary quarters, a rented hotel suite on Betazed. He was bound for Earth the next day. Sighing he took a sip of his coffee, a beverage that he’d developed a taste for, and he opened his message centre.

His heart stopped as he read the message subject.

Your application for the USS Saratoga NCC-31911, Security Officer

He took a breath. It had been the response that he had been waiting for. He opened the message his heart pounding in his chest.

Dear Mr. Galan,

The Saratoga, one of the prided ships in the fleet, would be honoured to have you as one of its crew, however, we currently have a full complement of security officers. We thank you for your interest and wish you all the best in your next posting. We will keep your application on file for future reference and might consider it for a transfer when and if a position in the Security and Tactical department shows up.

His heart sank. It had not been the response that he’d wanted. In the last few days he’d received rejections from the Geronimo, Voyager, and T’Kumbra.

He looked down the list of the available assignments and then selected the two ships that were left.

He attached his dossier and his applications and sent them off to the Valley Forge and the Galileo. He hesitated on the last one but it had been the only home he’d known for a long while and he hit the send button on both applications before he could change his mind. Not sending it would be hypocritical. He’d told Varro to do it and how important it was but here he was avoiding it.

He sat back and signed and then sent a silent prayer to the Profits that had been good to him thus far. He would have a more formal prayer when he got home to Earth. He smiled, he would also see Allyndra when he got back to Earth. He hadn’t seen her in a long time. This whole mess with his family had really thrown him.

Before the memories could hit Eelim stood up and headed out. He would indulge in a dinner tonight. He needed some thinking space.
