New beginnings

326 words; about a 2 minute read

At home, with a glass of wine at her side, Tuula reached over for the PADD on the table next to the couch. She had been putting this off for a little while, but it was time to review open postings. Having completed her residency and having an Assistant Chief Medical Officer position, albeit a brief one, under her belt, she had a lot more choice than usual in terms of where she was to be assigned.

As she grabbed the PADD to start it up, she caught her reflection in the screen and smiled. It had been a long journey, but now she was a full-fledged doctor. Further, the ink on her new neck tattoo was settling in quite nicely, and she was still satisfied with the design. It was just one of those little things that she had wanted for a long time and made her feel more comfortable in her body, a challenge ever since the accident. And her mother eventually did get over it, at least to the best of her knowledge.

Once she pressed the button, the screen came to life and her reflection was replaced with a menu of options. After checking in on a few things, she flipped to the open position listing in the personnel portal.

Browsing through the list, she saw a few come up. Saratoga, Valley Forge, T'Kumbra... they all seemed good, but nothing jumped out at her. The Voyager piqued her interest; the opportunity to serve on such a legendary vessel doesn't come around very often. But as soon as she saw the Galileo on the list, she had made up her mind. Even if it wasn't the same ship with the same crew, it was a good omen.

With a flick of her finger, she had sent off her application. Then, satisfied, she took a sip of her wine, in anticipation of the next phase of her journey...
