Personality & Traits

General Overview Lawrence disappears in a crowd. He seems like the most inconsequential person you will ever meet. Of course, he works hard at that appearance. Being the youngest in his rather large family makes the role almost natural. In reality, he is a man full of deep resentments and tightly reigned anger, though it rarely shows. He has no close personal connections, and has never thought about any kind of intimate relationship. His job is everything. He is ruthlessly efficient at his work, which almost never ceases. Only at night, when he is completely alone, or when he is giving his reports to the committee, will he put on a neatly pressed shirt, matching socks, and revel in his own cleverness.
Strengths Lawrence is a masterful actor. His ability goes deep enough to control and direct what he's feeling, making him difficult to read, even for an empath. He is also an expert in his fields. He is capable of using nearly any computer system after only a minute or two at a console. He is also able to construct and deconstruct complex encryption keys in his head. Although military-grade encryption is beyond mental calculation ability, with his know-how, he can crack almost any key within an hour. He is proficient at hand-to-hand combat and firing energy weapons, although he would be no match for a trained security officer.
Weaknesses Lawrence's lack of personal connections is a strong weakness. It automatically seems to make him a suspect in anything suspicious. Granted, many times he was the culprit, but it does make him an easier target. It also restricts his access to information, due to the fact that friends and lovers tend to have better access to information. He also likes to gloat, which has caused him no end of trouble. Although he rarely endangers the mission, he will regularly make life more difficult for himself by taunting the subjects of his observations.
Ambitions Lawrence is a career man. Although he has no illusion of Starfleet rank, he does receive excellent compensation for his work. He hopes to retire in the next couple of years to a nice island getaway somewhere where he will never wear a rumpled shirt again.
Hobbies & Interests Lawrence has few hobbies, but opera is one of them. He will listen to it at every opportunity. Although he is by no means fluent in French, Italian, or German, he knows every word and the meaning of every operatic composition he has ever heard. Other than that, he keeps up to date with the latest in computer technology and ensures that he is abreast of every new encryption, both military and otherwise.
Vernacular Lawrence speaks in clipped tones, and with precision. He has a mid-western, North American accent, although when singing along with opera, he can mimic the singer's accent nearly flawlessly.
Orientation Heterosexual
Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard, Several Other(Rudimentary)

Personal History Lawrence was born 7th in a line of brothers and sisters. As a result, he grew up as the youngest in a large family. Families can be cruel at times, and though Lawrence never felt any ill feeling for his parents, his siblings were a different matter. Each of his siblings excelled at something. Greg became a professional athlete, Beth became Earth's most prestigious brain surgeon. Both Trisha and Lyle joined Starfleet and advanced quickly. Nate and Charlie both finished school as the valedictorian in both their undergraduate and post-graduate classes and went on to become prestigious doctors in their respective fields. Even though Lawrence did well in school, he was never involved in athletics, clubs, or anything outside his school work.

During high school he was accepted into the advanced placement Information Technology Internship, and was one of two students who was responsible for maintaining and repairing the entire district's computer systems. Although it was a prestigious position for a high-school student, his news came on the same day as his brother's graduation from Medical School.

Whenever Trisha or Lyle were home they always wore their uniforms, and barked orders at their youngest brother. They bragged relentlessly about their ranks and responsibilities, mocking Lawrence for his complete lack of a social life, personal goals, and achievements.

The mocking, though likely just teasing from his siblings, didn't feel that way to the young man. As he grew up he became angrier and angrier every time they would visit or call home. Every achievement he seemed to have came just before or after something even bigger happening for one of his other siblings.

The final straw was when his parents skipped his high school graduation to attend Nate's graduation, after all, Nate was only a year older than Lawrence and already had completed a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and was now graduating with two PhDs.

Lawrence had applied to several universities, and been accepted. He packed his bags after returning home with his cap in hand, and has never been back.

College was a different story for Lawrence. Here he excelled at everything he put his hand to. He worked from the first day for a double-major in Computer Systems Science and Information Security and Encryption. He never took less than 24 credits in a single semester, and never got below a perfect grade-point average. He graduated as valedictorian, but never sent a note home, never called or visited.

Throughout his college career, Lawrence worked and went to school. He never formed any real friendships, let alone relationships. He managed to no only pay for school, but save up enough to purchase his own home by the time he graduated.
Starfleet History Graduation finally came, and Lawrence walked away from the stage with two diploma cases. On his way to the back of the auditorium, he was approached by a man in a very nice suit. The man introduced himself as Horace Charles, with the Federation's Oversight Committee, and asked if Lawrence would be interested in a job.

Lawrence went to the interview. He was nervous, but never allowed it to show. Instead, he smiled confidently and entered the room in a brand-new designer suit. Mr. Charles explained that the Oversight Committee was responsible for keeping an eye on Starfleet. The position that he had scouted Lawrence for was as an undercover operative working within Starfleet.

Lawrence would be responsible for working as a civilian contractor within various Starfleet stations, ships or bases. He would be accountable to his Starfleet superiors, but he would have a secret agenda. He would have authority from the Oversight Committee to observe Starfleet personnel and civilian contractors for any infraction of Federation law, or breach of Starfleet directives. After a period of gathering evidence, he would notify the Oversight Committee, testify at a closed hearing, and be reassigned to another case and repeat.

Lawrence considered for about three minutes before he smiled and accepted the position. And gladly.

The young graduate attended ten months of training on Federation law, Starfleet directives, courtroom procedure, and the methods he would be permitted to utilize during an investigation. He soaked up every piece of information he could find.

At twenty-three, Lawrence was given a contracting license and stationed aboard Starbase 441. It was a rich assignment. Corruption had run rampant aboard the station, and by the end of two years, Lawrence single-handedly gathered enough evidence, that when it was presented to the courts, twelve officers were reprimanded, seven others were dismissed, and one was convicted on criminal charges.

For the next twelve years he moved from vessel to vessel to station, and onward, collecting significant evidence. While some cases were more productive than others, he felt a warm glow of retribution each time he heard the results of trials he had instigated. Although he was never stationed anywhere near his siblings, he still felt like he was sticking it to them.

By the time Lawrence was assigned to monitor Project Sienna, he had brought in enough evidence that he was responsible for the reprimand of 29 officers and 31 enlisted personnel, the dismissal of seven officers, the court marshal of 26 officers and 35 enlisted personnel, and the revocation of 29 civilian permits. Each one gave him the pleasant sensation of hitting them where it hurt.

As far as his Starfleet file read, he was an excellent contractor with superb clearance and somewhat bad luck regarding postings. The persona he'd cultivated over the last fifteen years made him just about as inconspicuous as it is possible for a person to be. So when he was assigned as the contractor in charge of data security for Project Sienna, it wasn't a point of concern.

To Lawrence's surprise, however, Sienna was the first posting where he didn't find anything significantly wrong. Sure, he would provide enough evidence for several reprimands for station personnel, but Sienna's scientists were professional and followed rules to the letter.

When Sienna was evacuated, Lawrence received a coded message, informing him that following the project's delivery to Earth, he would be reassigned to Galileo.
Medical History Lawrence is in good health, although he does tend to have somewhat high cholesterol. His eyesight has also been a concern, although corrective eye surgery has largely repaired any damage that came from staring at a computer screen for extended periods of time. Lawrence is also susceptible to migraines.
