Physical Description | Rhett is about average in appearance. An oblong face features a lopsided smile and deep-set eyes that change color by what he wears. A short forest of hair tops his head and extends into modest sideburns, but like many of Earths forests in the 20th century, the borders are receding. His nose is not long, but has a tell-tale ridge from where it was broken years ago. His head turns on a moderate neck with a jutting adam’s-apple. His shoulders are somewhat broad, and you can’t see what he thinks is a slight paunch when he stops slouching. His long torso meets well-muscled legs and wide feet. Rhett’s palms, fingers, and toes are all blunt squares, making them look smaller than they actually are. Beyond pure physical description, however, there is a certain quality to Rhett that seems to engender trust and confidence. In public he carries himself with a quiet self-assurance that can convince anyone that he knows exactly what he is doing, and why. Perhaps it is simply personality, but despite the receding hairline and his perpetual slouch, he is not an entirely unattractive man. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | There have been theories that state that great leaders are born, not created. Rhett’s history challenges this adage. Even he recognizes that he has all of the innate qualities that create a great leader. Well, all except one: a desire to lead. He likes to help people; after all, that is why he joined Starfleet. He wants to make a difference in the galaxy, and he feels like he can, but he honestly has no idea how he will manage to do so. Rhett is a breeding ground for insecurities, but he’ll never let them out except with his closest friends. Instead, he has decided to show the world the aura of confidence that he sometimes genuinely feels. Rhett wears his heart on his sleeve, as the saying goes. If he is feeling something, it is apparent to everyone around him. This makes it difficult for him to lie about how he feels. Ironically, it actually makes him a better liar over all. Although he cannot mask how he feels, he can mask the subject of his feelings, and the reasons for them. That simple, unintentional misdirection makes him believable to almost anyone who doesn’t know better. It’s actually a bit of a problem for him, because Rhett has a tendency to lie about the most trivial things. The aspect of Rhett’s personality that shocks him the most is his success with the opposite sex. Most of his friends are women, and he has no shortage of dates. Although it is surprising to him, he has also taken it into stride. It’s gotten him in trouble more than once. |
Strengths | Rhett appears confident and self-assured. It is such a convincing lie, that most of the time, even he believes it. People believe in confidence, even false confidence. He also has the capacity to be a great leader. He is skilled, capable, and competent at his work. He remembers theory, and applies it to everyday situations with remarkable ease and fluidity. He is also skilled at his hobbies. Although he would never consider them marketable skills, he is a good chef, a connoisseur of books, and a moderate tailor, carpenter, and gardener. |
Weaknesses | Rhett is insecure and uncertain of almost everything. He has been for most of his life. He has a horrible memory, and must write everything down--especially names. He will lose the smooth ease with which he accomplishes a task unless he practices it every day. He is also almost completely unable to tell what anyone except himself would normally be thinking. Each of those factors has led him to a point where he is so uncertain of everything around him that he must put on the illusion of confidence just to get by. He is also completely unable to hide how he feels. |
Ambitions | Rhett has no idea what he wants to do. It changes from moment to moment. He does have some deep-seated personal ambitions, but often momentary ambition will over cloud his ultimate goals. He wants a large home on a colony, with a massive library of real books. He wants to have the means to travel wherever he wants and with whomever he pleases. Most of all, he wants to make a difference in the world—but he wants to make that difference from the sidelines. He doesn’t mind the spotlight, and he certainly likes receiving praise, but he has no desire to be the leader of any number of people. He prefers being the silent voice guiding the public figures in their decisions. In that way, his role as a diplomatic officer is uniquely suited. |
Hobbies & Interests | As a lifelong technophile, Rhett loves to have the newest and greatest inventions. He constantly monitors whatever engineering and technology feeds he can gain access to in order to find the next thing he wants. Rhett also enjoys reading and listening to music. He once dreamed of being a novelist, but instead, he satisfies himself by sometimes writing, and more often conceptualizing stories. Although he has found relatively few other officers who enjoy the old-earth pastime, Rhett has recently become invested in pen-and-paper role playing games. He also enjoys military simulations, and will usually spend time on the holodeck with a phaser-rifle and run through simulations with anyone he can find who wants to participate. Perhaps most surprising to many, and standing exactly opposite his love of technology, is Rhett's emphasis on a return to a simple lifestyle where technology plays a much smaller role. He has a collection of printed books. Some are antiques, others are simply replicated. He also tries to have his quarters retrofitted to allow him to actually cook and bake, instead of simply replicating his food. He also knows how to do some basic sewing, carpentry, and gardening. |
Vernacular | Although Rhett only speaks one language, he picks up an accent at an alarming rate. When speaking with a person with a particular accent, he will be surprised to find that in the course of a minute or so, he is speaking in that accent almost as fluently as his conversation partner. Sometimes this unconscious transition has offended those to whom he speaks, at others it has been a great asset. Ironically, he cannot fake most accents without a stimulus. Without fail he sound ridiculous, and it seems that he is mocking a number of accents, without being identifiable as any one. |

Orientation | Heterosexual | |

Personal History | Rhett is the oldest of his siblings by quite a margin. He grew up in a military family, and rarely stayed anywhere for more than a couple of years. For most of his childhood, he was a loner. It wasn’t until high-school that he began to make friends, and even those friends were limited. He lost track of them quickly after graduation and he moved on to college. College was everything Rhett had hoped it would be—at least for a while. He studied a variety of subjects. He studied computer programming and design, engineering, architecture, art, and humanities. Nothing seemed to fit, despite the fact that he loved each of the fields for very different reasons. It wasn’t until late in his sophomore year that he discovered his true passion. He began studying communication starting his junior year. In the space of two more years, he had exhausted all of the classes offered for communication at his current school. In an effort to enhance his understanding of the field, he transferred schools--to Betazed. The transfer did not go smoothly. Most of his credits were lost, and he was forced to re-take many of the basic classes he had already completed. Despite that, he pressed on, and in only a couple of years, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication. |
Starfleet History | It was shortly thereafter that he joined Starfleet. His academy experience was relatively brief. It was only a year and a half of training at the basic training camp followed by officer candidacy school (OCS); after all, he already had a degree. Needless to say, he completed the requirements and graduated. He was ready for his first posting. What he did not expect was a posting as Chief Diplomatic Officer, in a department of one. Every other department aboard was well staffed--except his own. |

Medical History | Medical File Rhett Brubwick is in good health, with only minor issues. My summary follows: Eyesight: Poor from 3 yrs old. Repaired at 21 when change had largely terminated. Lacks binocular vision. Hearing: Adequate. Motor Skills: Excellent. Speech: Excellent. Cardiovascular System: Adequate, requires regular exercise. Other: Suffers from severe migraines. Can be managed through use of medication. Migraines will recur if patient ingests caffeine, MSG, or ceases use of medication. Psychological File Rhett Brubrick clearly struggles with insecurities. His choice of the field of communication and diplomacy are uniquely suited to the treatment of his psychological state. Provided the continued study and practice of communication principles, I do not foresee any serious issues with Mr. Brubrick's service. |
