Personality & Traits

General Overview Lysander Valen Octavio possesses a unique combination of captivating charm and vanity. At first glance, he radiates charisma, his self-assured stride and persistent grin having a calming effect, even on the most jittery of newcomers. Yet, those who linger around him start to pick up on the more discreet hints of his self-centeredness. Lysander loves to narrate tales of his courageous feats and achievements, though the truthfulness of these anecdotes is often dubious. He maintains the appearance of reliability and loyalty, and will often demonstrate that he is capable of both, however Lysander shows a distinct hesitancy when it comes to head-on combat. Given the choice he will always opt for positions or duties that preserve or promote his impeccable image. As such he shies away from any situation that could blemish his standing.
Strengths Lysander's Betazoid heritage equips him with keen observational skills, allowing him to pick up on emotions and underlying nuances. This makes him an invaluable asset in situations that require interpersonal insights, such as interrogations or sensitive negotiations. His natural charm and charisma gives him presence, and allows him to defuse many situations merely with his words. Assuming it does not interfere with his rampant self-promotion, he is competent and capable in his role, and he will never pass up an easy opportunity to make himself look good.
Weaknesses Lysander's vanity is his Achilles' heel. His incessant need for adoration and recognition often leads him to exaggerate or even fabricate his accomplishments. He is tremendously self-centred and self-serving. This can prove useful to his colleagues if a task or situation will work in Lydsander’s favour, but it will often manifest as him finding a way to approach things in a way that prioritises either his safety or his image. Criticism is also a bitter pill for him; he frequently dismisses it, interpreting it as unwarranted jealousy rather than constructive feedback.
Ambitions Above all, Lysander desires to be remembered. He dreams of one day having a starship or even a celestial body named in his honour. His dedication to Starfleet will last as long as he can obtain fame within it, and one day he intends to pen a series of holo-novels about his exploits, real or imagined.
Hobbies & Interests When he isn't serving on duty, Lysander enjoys collecting antique mirrors from various civilizations—each reflecting his image in a unique way. He's also a connoisseur of fine wines from across the galaxy and loves hosting tasting events. Additionally, he's quite fond of both experiencing and writing holo-novels, where he can always cast himself in the lead role.
Vernacular Lysander speaks with a slightly theatrical flair, using elaborate and poetic language. He has a knack for making mundane events sound epic and loves using phrases like, "As fate would have it," or "In a moment of unparalleled bravery..."
Orientation Pansexual
Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard, Betazoid, A smattering of Vulcan, Klingon, and Ferengi – though often used more for dramatic effect than actual communication.

Personal History Lysander was born into a world of opulence and indulgence in Rixx, the bustling capital of Betazed. The middle child of the esteemed Octavio family, he grew up surrounded by magnificent art pieces from across the galaxy, instilling in him an early appreciation for beauty, luxury, and the dramatic.

Throughout his formative years, the Octavio residence played host to the galaxy's elite: ambitious politicians, renowned artists, and influential figures. Lysander revealed in the attention, quickly learning to use his natural abilities to charm, manipulate, and navigate these gatherings, always to his advantage. He'd often boast of his own exaggerated adventures, revelling in the admiration and validation they brought.

Lysander's teenage years were marked by a penchant for thrill and novelty. His many escapades included sneaking out to attend strangers' weddings and taking joyrides in stolen hovercrafts. For him, any attention, whether good or bad, was currency, and he spent it lavishly.

In his late teens, Lysander embarked on various travels. He visited Vulcan, picking up their language basics and developing a taste for their wines. On Qo'noS, he dabbled in Klingon opera, and in Ferenginar, he honed his negotiation skills while adding bits of the Ferengi language to his repertoire.

The Dominion War and the subsequent occupation of Betazed presented Lysander with a set of challenges and opportunities. While many Betazoids resisted or bore the brunt of Dominion rule, Lysander, with his innate knack for survival, saw avenues to safeguard his family's prestige and assets. Utilising the Octavio family's vast connections, he managed to strike discreet deals that ensured their art collections remained intact and their influence undiminished. As an influential family, the Octavios were essential for the Dominion to keep the local populace in check, and Lysander played this card well, maintaining a facade of neutrality.

However, as the war progressed, it became evident that the Federation was gaining an upper hand. Sensing the winds of change, Lysander began covertly establishing contacts within the Federation resistance. In a masterstroke of opportunism, he managed to provide Starfleet with critical intelligence about Dominion troop movements on Betazed, timing it perfectly to ensure maximum impact and minimum suspicion on his earlier affiliations. This act, while undoubtedly aiding the Federation's efforts, was also a meticulously calculated move on Lysander's part. He ensured that when Betazed was finally liberated, the Octavio name was not only cleared of any collaborationist stains but was also celebrated for its pivotal role in the planet's liberation. This move, while cementing his reputation as a hero in the eyes of many, was of course primarily a calculated decision to ensure his continued rise in the post-war landscape.

Seeing further opportunities for self-elevation, and with his recent "heroics" bolstering his application, Lysander, at the age of 22, set his sights on Starfleet. His journey wasn't without its challenges. His aversion to combat and his tendency to exaggerate his skills were hurdles. Yet, his charm, observational prowess, and newly acquired status as a "war hero" secured him a place as an enlisted security officer.
Starfleet History From the moment Lysander Valen Octavio set foot in Starfleet, it was evident that he was unlike any other recruit. His theatrical flair and penchant for dramatic storytelling were initially met with scepticism. However, as time progressed, Lysander's knack for emerging from situations unscathed and with his reputation enhanced became a source of intrigue for both his peers and superiors.

His initial assignment post-enrollment was on the USS Tempest, a relatively small frigate engaged in diplomatic missions. Lysander's abilities and his exceptional interpersonal skills made him a favourite for delicate negotiations. Whether it was a dispute over territorial rights in the Neutral Zone or trade agreements with emerging civilizations, Lysander was at the forefront. However, it was also during these missions that his tendency to embellish events became evident. On one occasion, after a particularly tense negotiation with the Romulans, Lysander regaled the crew with tales of how he single-handedly averted a potential war. The official logs were notably less dramatic, but Lysander's version somehow became the more accepted narrative.

Following his tenure on the USS Tempest, Lysander was transferred to the USS Aegis, a ship with a primary objective of exploration. Here, his tales grew even taller. Every discovery, every first contact, was woven into an elaborate saga with Lysander at its centre. There was the time he claimed to have saved the ship from a gravitational anomaly using only his telepathic abilities, or when he recounted how he bravely faced down a hostile alien entity, only for it to be revealed later as a harmless, floating spore. His colleagues often rolled their eyes in private, but Lysander's charisma was undeniable. The crew, especially the newer members, hung onto his every word, eager for tales of bravery and valour.

But it wasn't just his storytelling that kept Lysander in favour. There were genuine moments where his skills proved invaluable. His keen observational abilities often identified potential threats or opportunities that others missed. And his charm had a way of diffusing tense situations, often preventing them from escalating into conflicts.

His stint on the USS Aegis also saw Lysander's first brush with command. Given his record and the testimonials (some genuine, others perhaps swayed by his charm), he was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class, and became the most senior security officer aboard . It was a role he embraced with gusto, even if his approach was unorthodox. Under his leadership, enlisted members of the security team underwent rigorous training in the 'Octavio Method', a scheme Lysander claimed fused traditional security protocols with special Betazoid emotional insights.

In 2390, Lysander was summoned to Starfleet Command on Earth, tapped for a two-year stint as a Security Advisor. Given his history and the "accolades" that surrounded him, this appointment was not entirely unexpected. At Command, Lysander was thrust into the bureaucratic heart of Starfleet, consulting on a range of security protocols. With his usual theatrical flair, he regaled the top brass with tales from his service, using these (often embellished) experiences to provide "insights" into refining security measures, particularly for diplomatic missions. The decision-makers at Command were impressed, or at least appeared to be. With every presentation and consultation, Lysander’s stature grew. He deftly navigated the corridors of power, using every opportunity to bolster his image, painting himself as an indispensable asset to Starfleet's security framework.

By the end of his tenure in 2392, Lysander had firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the echelons of Starfleet. His role as a Security Advisor not only reinforced his image as a seasoned officer but also as a master strategist, even if many of his "strategies" were merely repackaged standard protocols with a touch of "Octavio flair." When the position on the USS Galileo came up, Lysander's recent "achievements" at Starfleet Command played a crucial role in his selection. The Galileo, with its advanced systems and mission to explore uncharted territories, needed someone with a "proven" track record. Lysander's application was backed by several endorsements from high-ranking officers at Command, some genuinely impressed by his work, others perhaps swayed by his undeniable charm. Regardless of the reasons, Lysander Valen Octavio secured his place aboard the USS Galileo, ready for the next chapter in his ever-evolving saga.
