Personality & Traits

General Overview Lia was born with a natural intellect that has both advantages and disadvantages. Academically, she’s a genius with a photographic memory, able to learn and analyse quickly. On the other hand though, she finds social interactions hard work, often feeling awkward and out of place. For that reason, she often finds it easier to keep to herself. When she warms up to someone though, she can find it easier to talk and open up, honest to a fault as many Betazoids are. She can have a stubborn edge to her though, especially when it comes to her studies. Her telepathic and empathic abilities do help to keep her empathy for other people in check though, even if she can find it overwhelming and not always easy to zone out. It also means she’s acutely aware of when she’s said something wrong or out of place, no matter how polite someone tries to be about it.
Hobbies & Interests Reading, writing, plays Betazoid piano, plays Earth violin, swimming, cooking with real food. Has an interest in all sciences even if xenobiology is her specialism.
Orientation Bisexual
Language(s) Spoken Standard, Cardassian

Personal History Lia was born on Betazed into a family of musicians and artists. She was an only child, quiet even at a young age, and encouraged in all her interests. Her parents realised quite quickly that she was different, and it became apparent that she had a high intellect but also struggled with natural socialising. By the time she settled in school, her teachers started to suspect she would flourish into a genius. Even if her parents were more used to embracing music and the arts, they encouraged the quiet and sometimes withdrawn girl in her love of books and learning.

Everything changed when Lia was 10 years old. The Dominion War broke out and Betazoid was invaded. Her parents didn’t survive the Dominion attack, and Lia only survived by being kept safe in her school. She was passed from pillar to post, without a real guardian or parent, and at times she was even in the hands of the occupying force, being moved around from one shelter to the next.

Even after the occupation had been forced off planet, life wouldn’t return to normal. As an orphan of Betazed, and with the huge problems they faced trying to put life back together after the occupation, Lia was one of a number of children with no surviving family who was taken in by the Federation to live in orphanages on other planets.

Lia ended up in an orphanage on Earth, and she found it hard to fit in. She had always found interactions with other people harder than everyone else around her. And now she was amongst strangers, she felt even more awkward and retreated further into being quiet and withdrawn. Recognising her academic talent though, the staff tried to get her engaged in her lessons and education seeing as she struggled with the social side of life. She advanced quickly in her studies, particularly in the sciences.

A couple of years later, Lia’s telepathic and empathic skills developed. Without the support network of family with the same abilities, she struggled to adjust. The more overwhelming it became, the more she buried herself into reading and learning, trying to focus on anything and everything else. She excelled in school exams, and she was accepted in university to study for a science degree at the age of 16.

From there, Lia flourished in the academic environment, early signs of her genius proving to be accurate. She went on to complete her masters, and, finding her focus in the world of xenobiology, she rapidly completed a PhD.
Starfleet History After graduation, the university was more than happy to keep her on as a researcher, but it wasn’t long until the Federation offered her all the resources she could dream of if she went and worked for them. The offer was too tempting and she took the offer eagerly, and after two years with them, they moved her to another post where her talents were put to better use.

Sometime in 2391, she fell off the radar. She left her posting at the starbase, and there are no further records of where she might have gone.
Medical History Lia was diagnosed with autism when she was taken to live in an orphanage on Earth; this can make the stress of empathic and telepathic powers overwhelming at times.
