Physical Appearance

Height 5'8"
Weight 175 lbs
Hair Color Brown
Eye Color Light Brown
Physical Description Serę's mother was 1/2 Vulcan, a fact which was not relevant to their life in any way, but that provided both Serę and Chaya with typical Vulcan longevity. Being 1/8 Vulcan, Chaya looks very young for her age, appearing for all intents and purposes as though she is in her late 20s instead of her late 40s.

She has dark, short-cropped messy hair and light brown eyes, and a fair complexion with the faintest olive hue. Her ears are not pointed, but her eyebrows are slightly. She has five je'shii (ridges) across the bridge of her nose. For her gender she is quite tall and muscular, hardened through years of physical fitness, military PT and her general love of Springball. She's a bit denser than average, owing to her Vulcan heritage, but appears slim.

Her style is quite minimalist, and when she's not in uniform she ordinarily is seen in simple black T-shirts and slacks, with of course her signature combat boots. Because of her training, Chaya is able to adapt herself in both looks and demeanor very quickly, but overall she comes across as confident and boisterous.

She is usually seen with her hands behind her back, clasped in front of her, on her hips, or crossed over her shoulders, and likes to throw her feet up all over the place. Her uniform is often rumpled, a product of her harried nature, excessive movement and voluntary patrols throughout the day. Her smile is mischievous and bright.
Body Art She wears the traditional Bajoran d'ja pagh, the ceremonial earring on the right ear signifying The Way of the Prophets, and has sought the trouble of obtaining an official uniform modification to prevent her commanding officers from taking issue with it. On her right bicep, she has a stylized logo of a megaphone surrounded by Bajoran script.

Additionally, she has two tattoos on the inside of her left forearm, each in stenciled Cardassian script, which correspond to a series of random numbers and letters. The tattoos are not exceedingly legible. It's easy enough to guess their origin, but Chaya has never sought to remove or cover them up. One of the tattoos has a red circle beside it.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Chaya possesses a very mild tactile perceptive ability and exceptional mental discipline, though this does not necessarily come across in her personality. Instead, it manifests in her relentless ability to endure and process traumatic events.

Due to her experiences, she is quite intolerant of Cardassians, though over the years and after the advent of the Dominion War, this has tempered somewhat. Nevertheless the association is one that is unlikely to ever be broken for her. As she's grown older she's learned to restrain herself, but she is utterly incapable of remaining silent when Cardassian crimes are downplayed.

Her tactical training allows her to rapidly adopt and espouse varying affects and viewpoints, and she is not shy about employing this ability. She can be quite charming and engaging, especially when interacting with assets. At her best, Chaya is an inspiring leader and revolutionary. At her worst, she can be positively vitriolic. She is outspoken and blunt, but can be persuaded by reason when necessary.

She is also spiritual, incorporating aspects of The Way of the Prophets in all areas of her life without apology. Having served on the Defiant-class Seine for a year, Chaya is accustomed to being part of a small crew who typically pitch in on most assignments. If she sees a broken down EPS tap or an out-of-order turbolift, she's more apt to fix it herself by simple force of habit.
Strengths Chaya conducts herself according to a code of strict (not always understood) honor. She has a number of skills and proficiencies obtained during the course of her training as well as exposure to various forms of combat in the Resistance. She has a rather witty sense of humor, and is passionate and progressive. She is a team player. Her laugh is infectious and occurs frequently. She has decent professional and personal boundaries, and is generally a well-adjusted, socially adept individual.
Weaknesses On the flip side, she can be unduly militant, and emotionally reactive. In the past, this has gotten her into trouble as she's struggled to assimilate into Federation culture. She can become hostile when provoked, and tends to use blunt and aggressive language. She is quite a disorganized person, in terms of her belongings as well as time management. Her work and living spaces are often cluttered and messy, much to the chagrin of her roommates and colleagues. Chaya is not what you would call a 'reader' and sometimes cuts corners on her paperwork.
Ambitions An activist at her core, Chaya's prevailing motivation remains to ensure that the atrocities committed against her people are neither forgotten nor minimized. Her political views have been shaped over the years, specifically since the Dominion War, and she is a loyal Starfleet officer. The desire to do her duty to the utmost of her ability is strong. Short-term goals include getting a freaking promotion (knock-on-wood, eleven years and strong). If pressed, she would tell you that she wishes to become a security chief 'at some point.'
Hobbies & Interests Debate, politics, journalism, sports, beer, aviation and weaponry. Most prominently, and perhaps shockingly to those who just meet her, Chaya is deeply religious. She enjoys (and this is true) studying the Orlineya, the formative Bajoran resource on the Sacred Texts. She has a deep, abiding love of interstellar foods, specifically spicy foods. The spicier, the better. Just don't ask her to cook for you. Chaya is familiar with three forms of martial arts: fyalquin, seraquin (dance-fighting and kickboxing, respectively) and Krav Maga. On a less positive note, she struggles with a mild addiction to the internet and her less savory talents include binge-watching seasons of Homeworld.
Vernacular Chaya's word choices are simplistic, reflecting a lack of early education, but her thought processes contain nuanced layers when one seeks to read between the lines. She does not pull punches or communicate with any degree of subtlety. Her tone, however, is typically upbeat and cheerful. She loves telling jokes and getting people to open up, and views talking as an essential component to her job. As a result, she. talks. a. lot. Good luck.
Orientation Bisexual
Language(s) Spoken Chaya's first language is Bajoran, which she speaks with a distinct Sizy accent. Her Cardassian is fluent, but formal. Federation Standard is her third language, but she is completely fluent, having studied a wide variety of Terran media to get the gist of idiomatic and figurative language. Due to her time on the Hyderabad, Chaya knows some basic Romulan phrases.

Personal History Cardassian terms. Bajoran terms.

Chaya was born to Tevran and Serę in 2346, in Jiknagrat Tah'reel (the 8th month of spring), in they village of Sizy, Dahkur. Her early life was quaint, filled with farm chores and schoolwork, but her parents fell into trouble with the occupying Cardassian forces by violating a decree which prohibited all Bajorans from owning weapons. Subsequently the entire family was interned at Gallitep. Chaya spent three years of her very young life there, before the camp's liberation by the Shakaar. After she was taken to an orphanage.

As an adolescent, she became involved with the local resistance movement and was used as a 'mail box' to ferry insurgent propaganda across provincial lines. In 2360, 14-year old Chaya was subject to a round of deportations meant to clear away a large habitable portion of her city in Khienal, and sent to Zyva. Zyva was home to a large factory tasked with the repurposing of deceased victims' clothing into uniforms and fabrics for the occupying forces. During the four day transport, she was turned over to the authorities by a prisoner functionary (ehves, short for ehvtgehtef, pejorative 'domesticated associate') and labeled a political agitator.

In all of the camps, a structure existed where inmates were assigned to different units or kalnatorektor ('companies') that possessed distinct jobs. Under pain of death, Chaya was assigned to remove the clothing from bodies prior to their disposal and to load them into carts that would be taken to the factory assembly for processing. All Bajorans who dealt with the dead were known as pertekkalnatorekor or, euphemistically, 'special company.' Due to her position, she was able to collect food and other valuables from corpses which she used to barter with the guards and avoid starvation.

In the official transcript of her testimony provided to the BPG Military Tribunal, she would go on to describe this circumstance as having entirely stripped her of personhood, creating a sense of self that resembled more an automaton than a living being. Her and other PKs she worked with would sit among the bodies and smoke, the scene grotesquely normalized in their minds' eye, to the point where her fellows would find loved ones amongst the piles and barely blink.

She was isolated from the other prisoners which protected her from from the bottom-up hierarchy of block elders and foremen, who were routinely provoked into abusing those under their watch. Because of this separation, a perception of these PKs arose, indicating that they were willing participants and collaborators. This persisted until several years after the Cardassian occupation ended, and testimony emerged which logically suggested that the Bajorans involved in these work units had no choice but to comply.

Chaya remained in Zyva until 2368. At this time, the Cardassian forces were beginning to realize that they would be unable to hold the planet indefinitely. Fearing reprisals from Bajor and its potential allies in the Federation, they began to dismantle the camps and destroy all documentation regarding their treatment of the Bajoran people. All who were held in Zyva were evacuated to a camp approximately ten miles just outside the border of Mazhe, by foot. Those who were unable to keep up were left behind on the side of the road to die.

At the age of 22, lacking any appreciable skills or education, and with her entire family murdered, Chaya emerged from her ordeal utterly adrift. She began receiving patch-job treatments for Kalla-Nohra, the characteristic syndrome of those present at Gallitep, and was asked to provide detailed and explicit testimony to the newly established Provisional Government who were keen to assess the circumstances of their occupation and hold the Cardassians accountable for widespread war crimes.

Hostility surrounding the circumstances of the PK began to emerge, with some going so far as to say the PKs were worse than the Cardassians and that they should be tried, but no official actions were taken against them by the Provisional Government. Chaya concealed her role to avoid ostracism and moved to a small, isolated farming community (ranunsyor boreshvazun) in Hendrikspool where her neighbors were fellow survivors and she wasn't required to interact with the public. There, she pursued a secondary education and slowly began to assimilate.

During her imprisonment, practice of the Bajoran religion was severely restricted. Nearly all of her peers had been impacted by the occupation and together, they joined a spiritually-oriented political youth group which advocated Bajor for Bajorans or simply Com Shalli, and fiercely resisted Federation involvement in their affairs, citing the Prime Directive as the tolerance of a genocide decimating over 15 million Bajorans.

She became deeply, almost defiantly religious and began scraping together formal knowledge of her people's customs as best she could from their shattered institutes. When the Federation established a permanent outpost on Terok Nor, Com Shalli moved their headquarters to the station and began printing a newsletter (Orlingapetri, the Bajoran word for the Cardassian occupation) resisting Starfleet's presence in the sector. CS, aside from rabble-rousing, also volunteered significant man hours to the restoration of the station in a Bajoran image, helping to build goryam (temples) where they could worship freely.

Gradually, most CS members were inducted into the Bajoran Militia and Chaya was no different. She received her training in counter-intelligence and espionage, and joined a team of soldiers whose sole mission was to establish covert diplomatic relations with the Cardassian government in order to entice them into giving up wanted Cardassian criminals, as well as pursuing those criminals directly.

When the Dominion War broke out, Bajor signed a non-aggression pact and many Bajoran personnel were evacuated from DS9, including Chaya. She returned to Hendrikspool during this time. Former CS members grouped together and once more engaged in the practice of disseminating propaganda urging the Federation to take action against the Dominion, and their government not to lie back and allow their people to be ultimately wiped out.

During this time, many CS members were arrested, but Chaya avoided this fate. During the Dominion and Cardassian occupation, Chaya and the CS resisted as best they could by stealing printing presses and doing their best to rile up Bajoran patriotic spirit, an offense most certainly punishable by death were they ever to be caught. She spent most of the war doing this, and began to ease up on her anti-Federation views near the end of the Dominion occupation.

In this period, she also met her husband Avarim, who was an agrobiologist that worked to establish facilities which would teach the Bajoran people how to farm the land and rehabilitate the soil that had been destroyed during the occupation in order to produce fruitful gains. Over many years, however, they grew apart and the relationship, childless, ended in divorce. The two are still on somewhat amicable terms.
Starfleet History In 2380, Chaya was given the opportunity to convert her militia service and attend Starfleet Academy. The road to peace between Bajor and the Federation for Chaya had been a long one, but the Federation had proven its loyalty to Bajor several times, in the form of the Emissary Benjamin Sisko, and with a heavy heart, Chaya accepted.

Immediately she was transported to San Francisco, Earth for the first time and dumped into the Academy's preparatory program at Fox River. This would certify her officially as having completed secondary education. Not only this, but Fox River taught lessons with an emphasis on uniform conduct and deportment, which exposed its adult learners to military expectations.

Chaya had few problems in this area, but she was known to be one of the louder students in class, always with an opinion on hand. The schoolwork itself was incredibly challenging, as up until that point she had never attended a formal educational institute, but she devoted herself to study and devised engaging and mnemonic methods of interacting with the material.

When the time came to apply as a cadet, Chaya's paperwork wasn't as strong as her peers, but she excelled at the interview. A panel was convened, comprised of three senior academic advisers, to determine if she had a place at the school. That summer, she received her acceptance packet, and would start in the Services Track as a Cadet Freshman Grade in September.

During her time at the Academy, she studied Federation Standard extensively rather than rely on the Universal Translator, in order to better pick up the wording of her assignments. She did extremely well in practical exercises, PT and combat, but would always struggle with the more technical, scientific and mathematical curriculum. She found her niche in extracurricular clubs and martial arts. By the time she was in the middle of her second year, she was TA-ing Krav Maga and giving presentations on the psychology of crime victims and perpetrators.

Her graduation was a quiet affair. Unlike her classmates, she had no family to see her off, and despite her gregarious nature, not many people really knew her well enough to call her friend. For herself, it was a time of pride, and she shed a few tears at the podium when she accepted her diploma.

Chaya's first ship was the USS Roanoke, a Galaxy-class starship which truly embodied the official mission statement of exploring new worlds and new civilizations. Chaya was a brig officer for most of her deployment, and the ship did get into a few skirmishes, but Chaya didn't see combat.

She was promoted to LTJG in 2385, and transferred to the USS Hyderabad. The Hyderabad was a Federation disaster relief vessel whose primary function was to travel to impoverished and war-torn areas and install food reclamators, provide medical supplies, and other devices which would help them achieve self-sustainability.

In 2387, Chaya was aboard the Hyderabad when the Hobus disaster broke out, and immediately they were sent to Kalirah II, to establish refugee zones for the flux of incoming Romulan survivors. She was assigned to a planetside operations team to evaluate the area and help with construction efforts, and remained stationed on the colony for the next three years. She became engaged with the Romulan culture there, and even picked up basic Romulan.

She was sad to leave in 2390, but Kalirah was a thriving community by then, so it wasn't with a terribly heavy heart. Her next assignment was aboard the Defiant-class USS Seine, a small border patrol ship with an even smaller crew. Chaya took on far more responsibility there, as everyone was required to pull their own weight. They saw combat numerous times, but they were a scrappy team that always managed to pull out of it.

Transforming herself into a Starfleet Officer has been a monumental task which, even eleven years later, manifests in very slight ways, most of all in her exceptional, deliberately cultivated ordinariness. She has served without distinction on three prior vessels, but all of her references indicate she is a solid, hard worker who loves her job and takes it seriously, even if that isn't always evident.
Medical History Her latest Starfleet physical determines her to be in excellent physical and mental health, so long as she has access to her medication.

In 2371, game-changing treatment for Kalla-Nohra became available to the masses. Most patients with KNS had significantly reduced life spans, but with the new medicine, patients are expected to live full and healthy lives. Chaya's symptoms are stabilized by tepfarizine, as well as an aerosolized inhaler of mazezerol designed to combat acute respiratory distress.

At Mazhe, Chaya contracted vetjca, an epidemic disease common to the camps caused by close proximity and unhygienic conditions. By some fortune (likely due to her ability to speak Cardassian) she was taken to a medical facility rather than outright executed where she remained until the occupation was over, serving as a translator. As a result, Chaya has a lifelong immunity to this and most other body louse.

Her records from Hendrikspool Rehabilitation Center following liberation are peppered with disease, poorly healed broken bones, refeeding syndrome and significant malnutrition. It took several months for her to stabilize.

Past psychiatric evaluations have praised Chaya's fortitude in terms of overcoming her experiences, and despite their intensity, she has not been diagnosed with any lasting disorders. She thus far does not meet the qualifications of post-traumatic stress disorder, and has no gross misconduct on her record. She does, however, possess some tendencies which are attributable to her past, including: hoarding food and medical supplies, and a heightened state of adrenal reactivity.

During her pre-flight evaluation on the Galileo in 2391, Chaya was implanted with a subdermal osmotic pump, alleviating the need for daily hyposprays of tepfarizine.
