| Personal History | Toby grew up in an agricultural zone of what was once known as Western New York to Toby (Sr.) and Margaret Stroud, farmers of corn and soy beans. Growing up, Toby felt out of place in the slow moving lifestyle he was born into, and sought out excitement wherever he could. Building his own jet-bike at age 9, it was a frequent sight in his village to see Toby speeding through fields at top speed, taking corners that older boys would be frightened to do. Toby's father disapproved of his son's risk-taking, and attempted to instill a strict discipline on him, which led to many arguments as Toby grew into a young man. When Toby became of age, he traveled to San Francisco to apply to Starfleet Academy. It quickly became evident that he possessed strong (if not reckless) flight skill during simulator tests, and was accepted into the Academy in 2381. While he had intended to come back home to say goodbye to his family, when he spoke to his father via communicator they had a huge verbal argument, and Toby ended the call abruptly. He and his family have not spoken sense, although his mother does send him messages from time to time. |

| Starfleet History | During his Academy years, Toby had a near-single minded focus on flight skills, and flight skills only. After one year his scores in that area were high, but his neglect of other areas of study such as Science, Federation Cultures, and Diplomatic Basics led him to almost fail out of the Academy. After this scare (and the prospect that he might have to return home), Toby buckled down on his studies, eventually graduating in 2385. Toby's first assignment was on a small outdated transport freighter, the USS Stephen Hawking. Life about the slow-moving and barely maneuverable ship was very boring for Toby, and the monotony of life about a freighter began to make him think that maybe he was in the wrong profession. However, during an attack by Ferengi pirates, Toby was able to avoid capture by using a nearby planet's gravity and mass to evade the Ferengi ship, pushing the freighter's hull and engines to the limit but successfully escaping nonetheless. News of this escape traveled quickly, mostly for the reason that other freighters in similar situations had never escaped capture. Toby enjoyed this new and brief fame, accepting praise (and drinks!) from anyone who would offer. His next assignment was to serve as Perimeter Security Pilot for Starbase 84. While an uneventful posting, Toby was able to spend his days piloting a Raptor-class ship, and he filled his time with attempting maneuvers in his agile ship. Eventually, the lack of action began to wear on Toby, and he began to seek a posting with a ship that might offer him some more action. |
