Personal History | Ariadne was born on her mother’s birthday, March 25th, in Tybee Island Georgia, the fifth child of Edmund Fleming, a classical scholar, and his wife Grainne O’Flaherty, an Irish native. She and her six siblings were schooled exclusively at home, provided with a well-rounded classical education by their father, and versed in the history, language, legends and folktales of Ireland by their mother. Ariadne lived her entire life by the sea, not even leaving Georgia till she joined the Academy (though occasionally their father took them on trips to Savannah or Atlanta). She loved the ocean; she was almost perpetually swimming, collecting seashells or just walking on the shore, so much so that her family would teasingly call her a nymph or mermaid. Her desire to study the ocean itself, however, as a science, was awakened when she was seven years old. She went out to sea in a little boat with her oldest brother, Kenneth, an amatuer sailor, when a tropical storm blew up from nowhere. The little boat was helplessly tossed about on the waves like a teacup. Kenneth turned his back for a moment, and Ariadne slipped and went under. Frantic, he dove in the water and pulled her back up, and instantly returned to shore as soon as the storm passed. But she hadn’t been frightened. Instead, she was fascinated by what she saw, so far out in the ocean and deep under the water. From then on, she knew that all she wanted to do was explore the mysteries of the ocean. Ariadne dedicated any spare time to her passion. She obtained all the books she could find on the subject, read scholarly journals and research papers, but primarily, did her own field research. In all this, she was encouraged by her parents and aided by her siblings. In the course of her study of Earth’s oceans, she stumbled across materials discussing the seas of other planets. Fascinated by the diversity, and yet their similarity, she decided to probe deeper into the mysterious subject. Finally, at age 15 she published a paper discussing, not only the marked differences, but also the striking similarities of the oceans of other planets to Earth’s. Notwithstanding her age, it was extremely well received by the scientific community. When she was sixteen, the commandant of Starfleet Academy himself approached, encouraging her to join Starfleet. after much discussion, rumination and personal reflection, she agreed, but preferred to wait till she was eighteen. Though not the ambitious sort , she rapidly moved up the ranks, till she was assigned a position immediately upon graduating the Academy. The Galileo is her first assignment. |
