| Personal History | James Watt was born in 2361 on Volan III, a Federation colony. He was born at the tail end of the Federation-Cardassian War, shortly before Volan III was ceded to the Cardassian Union as a part of the Demilitarized Zone's redrawing under the Federation-Cardassian Treaty. As such, the Watt family was subjected to the influence of Maquis activity and may have sympathized with the organization, though they did not join them. Watt was twelve when the Dominion War broke out. As before the war, he and his family avoided direct conflict with the Maquis or with the Dominion forces. They did, however, suffer from effects of the Maquis eradication along with the rest of Volan III's inhabitants. He was sixteen when he decided to enlist in Starfleet in order to escape the conflicts that plagued Volan III even after the war ended. His aptitude scores allowed him to train in the enlisted division of Starfleet Corps of Engineers and after several months of training he was given the rank of crewman apprentice and assigned to the Sovereign class starship, the USS Nivar. He served aboard the Nivar for a year before being promoted to full crewman at the age seventeen and reassigned to the USS Lexington, a Nebula class vessel. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to Starbase 400 (Stardock Class) where he became a member of the auxiliary engineering team, serving for several years as a member of the damage control team with several tours of duty on a number of starships. Several months into his assignment on Starbase 400, in 2381 at the age of twenty, Watts was made a Petty Officer third class and eventually became a damage control specialist. In two more years he was promoted again, but in 2384 he received a demotion. Rumors of an affair with a commissioned officer were involved with his demotion, though never proven. But a year later his rank was reinstated and in a few months he found himself reassigned to an Olympic class medical ship, the USS Phlox. Watt stayed with the Phlox for over a year, managing to stay out of any serious official trouble. Following an extended leave of absence in 2387, he managed to obtain a position aboard the USS Sojourner, a newly christened Intrepid class starship, during her maiden voyage under the command of its then new captain, Tol Neja. In 2389, after over two years of serving on the Sojourner (which included a promotion to Petty Officer first class), Captain Tol was killed in action, her death effecting her crew strongly. Several took leaves of absence, but Watt did not. He did not stay for long, however, and only a few weeks passed under the command of the Sojourner's new captain, Kirk Delhar, before Watt was transferred to the USS Galileo. |
