Sim Milestone - Ten-Year Anniversary

Posted on 03 Mar 2022 @ 6:45pm by Rear Admiral Lirha Saalm

It's with much pride and honor that I announce our game's 10th anniversary. Our adventures started in February 2012 and we've just crossed the decade mark into March 2022.

Remarkable. Outstanding. Proud and humbling. It's hard to convey the emotions I'm feeling. Back in '12 when I was going through the Obsidian Fleet Academy as a first-time GM, I don't think I quite understood the full nature of creative writing. I came into this hobby as a Trek video gamer who wanted a way to keep experiencing the fandom in the absence of licensed games and new canon material. What I found was a community full of fellow enthusiasts trying to achieve the same thing. A plethora of great writers from around the world, from all walks of life. I got sucked into this adventure with our storytelling and characters, and it became my passion to write Trek on this game.

Ten years is a long time. I've finished two degrees, avoided two marriages, and am the proud father of a 5yo. I was 28 years old when the game launched and now I'm finding new gray hairs every day. I never could have predicted Galileo would still be telling stories in the 2020s. We've survived every simming drama in the book, beat COVID, and are still here.

I think back to all the players and characters we encountered along this journey. All of the friends we made and the ones we lost. The hilarious posts and personal logs, and the tear-educing ones. The OMG moments. All of it is our collective legacy.

I'm proud to be your GM and to write with each of you every day. Nothing is ever taken for granted. This game is the best of the best. Contenders have come along, and they've faded away. The community we've built here is unmatched by any other I've seen. Many of you I've known since '12 and others of you are more recent arrivals. We've grown older and matured together, and we're all still here...writing authentic Trek at the highest level.

I thank each of you - sincerely - for everything you've contributed to this game. I thank you all for your passion and trust. You are Galileo. I'm just the one who herds everyone in the right direction.

Happy 10th Anniversary! Congratulations on this milestone. It's well-earned and well-respected by our peers.

And now, a message from one of our AGMs, Marilyn:

Ten years! I am not sure I have been in a SIM that has managed that long, gone through so many people, and associations. I had to go back and see how long I have been with the Galileo and not quite back to the beginning but according the stats, over eight years.

Have there been some times that have been rough? Indeed, times when I almost thought the SIM was going to shut down. Have there been great times, but of course and it is because of all the people that are here, and others that for one reason or another have had to depart.

Why has this SIM lasted so long? Besides the writers, it is the story lines as well. Some have had intricacies that are movie worthy. The plots have been interesting, moving, but also set well enough to try to involve every writer and make a challenge to write.

As many of you know, my main character is something non-canon. What is called a custom species. On many Star Trek SIMs, such things are strictly forbidden, but Galileo was willing to let me play the character. I will say it has been a joy to explore and create a world, a language, and then allow the character to express and show that culture.

I am not sure that it has had that much influence but along the way, playing a medical person influenced a bit of my own life and it has pushed me to start working on something I wanted to do for a long time and enter medical school. So some say that RL influences the game, but is this the game influencing RL. Who knows.

Personally, I have enjoyed this run, and hope to writing something in fifteen year anniversary or beyond. So thank you to Jay and everyone for the great ride! "First star to the right, Engage and Let's Fly!"
